ISBN-10: 0415137810
ISBN-13: 978-0415137812
Book Description
This second volume of Marcuse's collected papers includes unpublished manuscripts from the late 1960s and early 1970s, such as Beyond One-Dimensional Man, Cultural Revolution and The Historical Fate of Bourgeois Democracy, as well as a rich collection of letters. It shows Marcuse at his most radical, focusing on his critical theory of contemporary society, his analyses of technology, capitalism, the fate of the individual, and prospects for social change in contemporary society.
Douglas Kellner's introduction places Marcuse's work in the context of his developing critical theory of society and relationship to the Frankfurt School. In the Afterword, Jürgen Habermas assesses Marcuse's relevance and importance today.
Review
"[The series] will make a real contribution to reviving a neglected figure in American as well as world philosophy." -- Stanley Aronowitz, The Chronicle of Higher Education
"[These essays] testify to the continuing provocation of Marcuse's thought fifty years later." -- Martin Jay, University of California, Berkeley
"... an astounding synthesis of philosophy, social science, economics, and literature... The selections contained in this volume concisely articulate Marcuse's vision of a revolutionary future." -- David Ingram, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews
